Scholarships

Any current show exhibitor, who is a high school senior in the fall of the current calendar year, is eligible and encouraged to apply for the scholarships listed. Each applicant must fill out ONE SCHOLARSHIP application blank to be considered for all scholarships except the Hoar WJLS Scholarships.

****Applications need to be submitted to the show manager by September 20, 2017. Interviews need to be scheduled for Wednesday October 4, 2017 starting at 4PM.
 
Lange Scholarship: One $500.00 scholarship will be awarded for the second semester of an approved accredited program.

Harrington Scholarship: One $500.00 scholarship will be awards for the second semester of and approved accredited program.

Darrell Bishop Memorial Scholarship: One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the second semester of an approved accredited program

Rasmussen Trust: Three $1000.00 scholarships will be awarded for the second semester of an approved accredited program.

Ray Godfrey Memorial Scholarship: One $1200 scholarship will be awarded for the second semester of an approved accredited agricultural related program.

Stan Allen Memorial Scholarship: One $500.00 scholarship will be awarded for the second semester of an approved accredited program.
 
Darrell Hoar & Bob Hoar Family’s WJLS Scholarship: Two $500 scholarships will be awarded for the Junior (3rd year), Senior (4th year) or for continuing your education (Masters or Doctorate) of an approved accredited program. Brothers, Darrell and Bob Hoar are alumnus of WJLS. Deadline for applications is August 1, 2017. The scholarship will be awarded mid August 2017. If you are the recipient you will be notified and the check will be sent to the college where you are enrolled. Applications must include the following information:
* Must be an alumnus of Western Junior Livestock Show
* Must include the years that you participated in WJLS, (i.e. from 2007-2017)
* What species of livestock did you show at WJLS
* Must be entering your Junior Year, Senior Year or continuing education (i.e. Masters or Doctorate degree) of College pursuing a career in agriculture
* Provided three letters of recommendation- (two from non family acquaintances and one from a college professor or advisor)
* 500 or more word essay on your future goals in agriculture
* Current college transcript, including address of the college
* Current glossy picture (3x5 or 4x6)
* May apply for this scholarship if you have been a previous recipient
* Please remember this scholarship is available to all WJLS alumni. If you know of someone that fits the criteria, please pass the information on to them.

Denver Trip Application

Western Junior Livestock Sow participants who meet the qualifications listed below and who desire to compete for an all-expense paid trip to the Denver area and the National Western Stock Show should obtain a WJLS point sheet. Point sheets are available from the WJLS website or from the WJLS Manager. This point sheet must be completed accurately and delivered to the WJLS office by NOON, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2018. Trip applicants must be a Senior 4-H member who are exhibitors in the current WJLS and have exhibited at a minimum of three (3) WJLS (including the current show). This trip will be awarded to senior 4-H members on the basis of point sheet totals. The number of trips to be awarded will be dependent on the number of trip sponsorships available. Anyone who has previously received a WJLS Denver Trip is not eligible for a second trip. However, 4-H members who have earned an award trip based on the livestock judging contest may compete for a trip based on the point sheets. Youth or chaperones that violate the WJLS code of conduct or break the law will be required to reimburse the WJLS for their trip expenses. WJLS reserves the right to compensate the winners in another way if there is not enough participants for the trip. Western Junior Livestock Show directors have decided to provide the trip every other year.

Cattleman’s Family Legacy Scholarship
~~~Applications due September 27, 2018~~~Interview October 10, 2018~~~

The Cattlemen’s Family Legacy program is a scholarship program designed to pass on a Black Hills Stock Show cattleman’s legacy by donating a heifer to the next generation in the form of a scholarship to a Western Junior Livestock Show exhibitor. This heifer will be raised and shown by the scholarship recipient. The recipient will receive the heifer after the 2019 Black Hills Stock Show and must return to show her at the 2019 Western Junior Livestock Show.

Criteria for selection:
Applicant is required to have a commitment to agriculture, future goals, and the ability to raise the animal in a proper setting.

Eligibility Requirements:
•Applicant must be between the ages 8-17 at the time of the 2018 Western Junior Livestock Show.
•Applicant must be a livestock exhibitor in the current Western Junior Livestock show.
•Write a statement (500 words or less, typed) on: Why you want to be part of the Cattleman’s Family Legacy?
•Applicant must have the facilities and capabilities to care for and raise the animal in a proper setting.
•Include with application a letter of recommendation from a non-family member who is able to comment on your abilities to care for this animal.
•The application must be signed by applicant, County Educator / Advisor and from parent or guardian to accept responsibility of this animal.
•A selected group of applicants will be asked to have a brief interview with the Cattleman’s Family Legacy committee prior to Thursday evening’s supper. Winner will be announced that night.
•Applicant will take possession of the heifer at the conclusion of the 2019 Black Hills Stock Show.
•Heifer will be displayed at the 2019 Black Hills Stock Show. Winner is not required to be present that week but is asked to be present at the BHSS Banquet and Ball, for a recognition ceremony.
•Heifer must be bred and shown in the Futurity show at the 2019 Western Junior Livestock Show by applicant.
•Winner is required to provide the Central States Fair with a progress report twice within the first year.
•Failure to follow these requirements may result in loss of award.
